The Portrait

Pictures are tools to freeze moments for a long period of time. It helps us remember that particular moment every time we see a picture, photo or image. Long ago certain tribes ban taking pictures because they believe cameras take their soul whenever their picture is being taken. Well, they are not wrong. The story revolves around a portrait that hides secrets about life and death.

Once there was a wealthy family living in a famous chateau. This family was known for being the jetsetters of that time. They travel a lot and they are also famous for being intellectual in every aspect in science. The father of the house is a famous scientist and the mother is a renowned actress. They both were given a precious little girl name Kaila. Soon their father invented an elixir that defies the law of life in the manner of ageing. He first tried the elixir to his wife, who voluntarily wanted to try it, and soon results were visible in just a few days.

It was Christmas Eve and like any other traditions it was time for them to take a portrait for the yearly canvass to be put up the wall. As the camera flashed and took their picture, it was the start of a totally different life for the family. After Christmas Eve the mother started to act strangely saying that she was a child of God and that she was immortalized in the picture. Soon after she committed suicide and not long the father became insane and killed Kaila leaving the chateau and all the property on hold and untouched.

30 years had passed and a group of students went to the chateau to investigate about the famous scientist who turned insane and they are trying to unravel the said elixir. The group went inside the mansion without any permission but no one really cared because it was abandoned ever since that tragic day happened. On their way there a few people tried to warn them about the said portrait that was cursed and that if they see that the mother is not in the portrait, they will die.

The leader of the group went inside and took pictures of the place. As they reached the dining hall they saw the portrait hanging on top of the fireplace. They slowly walk towards it but a strange noise was first heard at the ceiling as one of the member of the group looked up he vanished into thin air. The group started to panic. They ran outside the room they scattered throughout the halls. One of them tripped over a decapitated leg. They place turned out to be a graveyard of amputated bodies. The only girl in the group stumbled upon a room full of children’s things. As she approached the bed she saw a half empty bottle with a label written on it saying “M. Elixir”. She grabbed the bottle and ran away. Another guy also stumbled in a room that was once the master’s suite. He locked the door and sat behind it. He couldn’t believe what just had happened. Everyone was terrified over what they were hearing and seeing. He then stood up and walked around. He saw a diary. He read the final page of it. Saying:

January 24

It was then when I realized that the elixir’s true form was. My wife acted strange and wanted to die for she said the devil will prolong her for eternity. The elixir was more of a hallucination drug but it makes the person youthful and beautiful. This maybe the results of my wrong actions, making my wife a guinea pig for the elixir. Joining the cult was not all good. I know that God will never forgive me for selling my wife’s soul to the demon.

Then a gush of wind entered the room and the man grabbed the diary and ran away. The leader of the group was hiding behind the stairs when he came across with the two members of the group, the girl who took the bottle and the guy who found the diary. The girl showed the bottle and the guy told the other two what the diary contain. It says there that the father, after finishing college, joined a cult who was devoted with the art of the devil. The cult gave him his last assignment, to make immortality a reality but there is a twist. He must sell his wife’s soul in order for him to achieve the elixir.

He also stated there that he wanted to stop the deal because his wife was getting delusional and that he will go crazy if it continues but the cult persisted on doing the soul exchange. The father then went insane. The three of them finally unravel the truth. The moment they closed the book a gush of wind blew them to the next room, the dining hall where the portrait was hanging. They frightfully looked at the portrait and to their surprise the mother was gone! They all hoped and prayed for their safety. The woman on the other hand held the bottle tightly and looked at it strongly and asked “Why was this in the children’s room?”

They heard strange voices coming from the fireplace; they were voices like cries of children being burned to death. Then the leader of the group had a flashback. He saw in his mind a little girl sneaking up in the laboratory and getting the elixir. They splashed some of the water on to the portrait leaving the portion of the mother covered with the elixir then they went to the room and hid under their bed as their father went up to the room holding a rope and a skewer. Then he burned them in the fireplace.

He told the two other members what he saw and looked at the portrait with a sharp eye while quoting “Now we know what really happened!” After he spoke those words violent winds and aggressive poltergeist happened in front of them and as this was happening a persona was walking towards them holding something in its hand. To their astonishment it was the mother holding a camera and softly spoke “I will not let you reveal the truth! Instead stay with me forever.” Then the woman took their picture and the three of them where immortalized in a picture and never to be found like the rest of the people who knew the truth. All of them compile in a photo album in the chateau’s library.

THE END
