“World’s greatest Dad”

My dad was once my best friend. When I was still a child I could remember him taking me to the park to play catch or just to play tag with me. We were the best of buddies but as soon I reached my high school years. My bond with my father slowly faded. Then one unforgettable event happened to us. Here is our story.

“It was the first day of my freshmen year. I was scared to enter the school but my father smiled at me and said “Ben, I am so proud at you that you are now in high school. Please study well for this is your future not ours.” I just smiled back because I kept on hearing those same words every year. I stepped out of the car and went on. The first day was ok. It was not that special but at least I made a couple of new friends. “

“A couple of weeks I began to befriend this girl. Her name was Kylie, she was very pretty and she was very kind. Not long we started dating and that was the very first time I had a girlfriend. I told my father about her and he got excited to meet her. That’s what I like about him. He was cool with everything and that he is open minded about things. I sometimes pity him because he worked at a construction site and every time he goes home he is very tired and weak. The fact that he is old makes it ten times harder.”

“After a year of courting Kylie I told my father that I would take Kylie home to meet him and mom. He told me sure and he was delighted to find out that I am no longer a boy. I was his little man. I just smiled and went on. That night I brought Kylie and she met my family. Everything was going alright when soon I found out that she was cheating on me. I hated her so much and I even hated myself more for being so stupid to fall for such a girl like that.”

“I soon started drinking and went home late at night. That was then when my father started to scold me. I was so irritated with my life and he scolding me, added more to that irritation. I soon started yelling at my dad, telling him that he was so annoying and so stupid. I was being taken over by my hatred towards my first love.”

“One night as I was walking down the road, I took the shortcut down the construction site where my father was working. I was holding a bottle of rum but I was not yet drunk. I was planning to drink it by the lake shore but my dad saw me and he took the bottle and slammed it on the ground. At first I did not recognized him because it was dark, the only source of light was the moon so it was blurry and I got angry and tried to hurt my dad but when he spoke and said “Son, stop this non sense! I know it’s hard for you but please don’t ruin your life for such a pitiful girl!”

“I soon started crying and dropped on my knees! I told him “You don’t know anything about how I feel! I loved her so much and that she was everything to me! You don’t give a damn! When we broke up, were you there? You were gone for 5 days! 5 days!! You did not tell me where you have gone to! I have no one to share my feelings to! You know you are my best friend!” my dad slowly approached me and then...we both fell into a pit.”

“As I open my eyes total darkness was all that I can see and as I look above, only stars are the light that you can see. We were covered halfway with dirt and my dad held my hand and said “Are you ok? Do you feel something that hurts?” I just said no and tried to scream for help.”

“It was almost an hour that we were buried halfway to our chest. My dad started to lose conscious because of the tight space we were in. His hand was almost loosing grip to mine and I started to panic. Then the worst thing happened, it started raining hard. The pit was slowly being filled with water after a few minutes I heard someone walking closely to us and I screamed HELP! It was a stranger that was passing by he told us to hang tight, he will call for help.”

“Now I was the one losing conscious. I was getting dizzy and paranoid of drowning. My dad held my hand the whole time, he said sorry every time i moan because my legs got numbed. It was the first time I saw my dad cried. The whole time we were on the pit he tried to talk to me to regain conscious I know he is in pain more than I am but he encouraged me to stay awake. Then the rescuers came and pulled down a rope. My dad screamed “Take my son first! Take him! Save my son first!” As my dad put the harness around my chest area my vision started to go blurry and as I was being raised up to the ground my father held my hand and said to me “I love you, son. Please be safe. Everything is alright now. I am sorry for not being there for you. I hope you understand.” Then as our hands separated the dirt started to pile in on him and water gushed up to his neck. The last thing I saw when I was being raised up was his smile as if he was saying that he is happy that he had a son like me.

“I was put on the ambulance and I was relieved when one of the rescuers told me that my dad was being lifted now and everything was going alright. As soon I was wheeled into the ambulance, people began screaming and panicking. I heard them saying “The pit! The pit piled on! Get the man out of there!”

It was the last time I saw my dad. He was buried alive in that pit; it was already morning when the rescuers dug my dad out and my mom told me when I was in the hospital bed how my dad looked like when he was being raised up. My dad was holding his locket. That locket contained our picture together.”

“I soon found out the reason why my dad was gone for 5 days. He was working another job in another town. My mom told me he was saving money for my college and for my birthday present, a car. I told myself that whatever happens I will graduate and find a stable job. For this was my father’s dream. He gave his life for me so that I can undo my wrong doings. I know somewhere out there; my father is looking at me and guiding me all the way.”

THE END
